“ Wayúu ” bags from Colombia
Wayúu craftsmanship is the ancestral art of the indigenous people of the Guajira Desert in northeastern Colombia. It is passed down from mother to daughter. Wayúú bags, commonly called "mochilas," represent the mother's womb, the beginning of life . The first mochila a mother weaves is her child. The base of the mochila always consists of a spiral symbolizing the creation of life and a kaanas (pattern) representing the cosmos, the sun, and the stars. On the body of the mochila , the kaanas represent the dreams and life paths of the woman. Each bag woven from cotton thread thus carries the story of the woman who made it .
