Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about vegetable gold (Capim Dourado)
What is vegetable gold?
Vegetable gold is the name given to Capim Dourado (Syngonanthus nitens), a rare wild plant that grows naturally in the Jalapão region, in the heart of Brazil. This grass has an intense golden color and a unique natural sheen, without undergoing any chemical treatment or gilding.
How are Chakana vegetable gold jewelry pieces made?
Each piece of vegetable gold jewelry is handwoven by local artisans using ancestral techniques. The golden stems are sewn together with fibers from palm leaves (Buriti) or golden thread. The clasps and frames are then assembled to create durable, lightweight earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings.
Is vegetable gold jewelry eco-friendly and ethical?
Yes. The harvesting of Capim Dourado is strictly regulated by the Brazilian government to preserve the ecosystem:
- Sustainable harvesting: It takes place only between September and November, when the seeds are ripe and fall to the ground, ensuring natural regeneration.
- Fair trade: Chakana works directly with artisan associations, ensuring fair pay and preserving local craftsmanship.
How to care for and clean your vegetable gold jewelry?
Vegetable gold is naturally durable and very lightweight. To preserve its shine:
- Avoid prolonged contact with water and remove your jewelry before swimming or showering. There's no need to worry about fresh water (rain, for example), but be sure not to wear your jewelry in the sea or pool.
- Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth if necessary.
- Store them away from extreme humidity.
Does vegetable gold jewelry cause allergic reactions?
No. Capim Dourado stems are 100% natural and hypoallergenic. The metal findings (hooks, clasps) used by Chakana are guaranteed to be nickel-, lead- and cadmium-free, making them suitable for sensitive skin.
Wayúu Bags
How are Wayúu bags made?
Wayúu bags (or mochilas) are entirely handwoven from cotton thread by women from the Wayúu community, who live in the Guajira Desert in northeastern Colombia. This traditional craft is passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter.
Is every Wayúu bag truly unique?
Yes, absolutely. Every woven pattern (called kaanas) tells a story, dream, or life journey unique to the weaver. No two bags are alike, so you can be sure you have a one-of-a-kind piece.
What styles are available?
The collection includes traditional mochilas, tote bags, pouches, tote bags, and backpacks.
How should I care for and wash my Wayúu bag?
Wayúu mochilas are woven from highly durable cotton thread. You can wash them by hand in lukewarm water with mild soap, or in the washing machine at 30°C on a delicate cycle (preferably in a laundry bag). Leave it to air-dry flat to retain the bag's shape, and avoid hanging it up when it is very wet.
Are Wayúu bags sturdy and durable?
Yes, the traditional twill weave used by Wayúu artisans is particularly dense and tight. This technique provides excellent structural strength and great resistance to everyday wear, making these bags very sturdy and designed to last for years.
Banana Leaf Leather Goods
What are banana leaf leather goods?
This is a plant-based, sustainable alternative to traditional leather, made from the trunks and leaves of Tanee banana plants. This supple, distinctive material has a natural look while remaining lightweight and durable.
Where do the materials come from, and where are the products made?
The bags and accessories are handmade in western Thailand. The material is harvested from Tanee banana plants, which die naturally after flowering, ensuring a process that respects both the plant and the environment.
How should I care for my banana fiber bag?
Although this is a sturdy plant-based material, we recommend avoiding prolonged, direct exposure to water or sources of extreme humidity to preserve the natural fibers' flexibility and luster over time.
Accessories Made from Recycled Can Tabs
How are accessories made from can tabs?
In Brazil, aluminum can tabs are collected, then cleaned and polished. They are then hand-crocheted together one by one using strong textile thread.
Aren't bags made from recycled can tabs too heavy or sharp?
No, not at all. The aluminum used for the tabs is extremely lightweight. What's more, the edges are carefully smoothed and incorporated into the crochet weave, making the bag very pleasant to the touch, lightweight and completely safe.
What do these accessories look like?
The woven tabs create an original look reminiscent of chain mail or woven metal, with a shine that is modern, elegant, and unmistakably eco-friendly.
